Description of Position
College of the Sequoias is seeking a candidate to fill a part-time counseling position in the CalWORKs Program. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Conducting educational, vocational and personal counseling appointments for a diverse community college population.
• Planning, organizing and coordinating program activities.
• Teaching components of guidance courses (extended orientation, career planning, and personal development) as needed.
• Providing follow-up counseling services to students as stipulated by state and college matriculation guidelines.
• Referring students to public service agencies.
• Identifying and mitigating circumstances which may limit access and success of students in college.
• Interpreting standardized tests for course placement recommendations.
• Developing and maintaining cooperative relationships with various county agencies.
• Participating in appropriate counseling and faculty/ staff meetings.
• Participating in college-wide student retention efforts.
• Performing other duties as assigned.
Participation in the governance of the College by way of committee assignments is encouraged. Other responsibilities include maintenance of a required number of office hours to meet student needs, full participation in departmental responsibilities and the willingness to create and/or participate in and sustain an atmosphere of equality, justice, and appreciation for diversity throughout our College.
Conditions of Employment
Salary with Master’s degree is lab rate $44.51 hourly. Contract period is for ten (10) months during the regular academic year beginning August 2008 through May 2009. Summer hours may be available depending on funding.
Participation in a pre-service orientation in January 2008 is required.
Screening Procedure
Only complete application packages will be evaluated by the screening committee as soon as possible after the closing date. Application materials will be evaluated to determine how fully the applicant meets the Desirable Qualifications. This evaluation process will determine which applicants will be invited for an interview. The most successful interviewees will be invited to a second interview.
All costs incurred as a result of the application/selection process shall be borne by the candidate.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
The candidate must meet one of the following criteria. The degree must generally be from an institution accredited by the Western Association of School and Colleges or the equivalent.
• Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, or career development or
• the equivalent.
• Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Candidates claiming equivalency must demonstrate a combination of education and other accomplishments that are equivalent to the MQ’s. If claiming equivalency, you will need to read the attached Board Policy 5001 on equivalency and prepare a statement documenting how you feel you meet the equivalent qualifications.
Desirable Qualifications
In looking at application materials, the Hiring Committee also seeks evidence of the following:
• Recent experience in community college or secondary counseling/guidance.
• Knowledge of Private Sector employment conditions, requirements and needs.
• Knowledge of requirements for transfer, vocational and remediation programs.
• Ability to work closely with faculty in other disciplines.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Ability to organize, plan, develop, implement and evaluate a program.
• Familiarity with Welfare Reform legislation.
• Knowledge of computer programs for teaching and counseling.
• Ability to exercise a considerable degree of independent judgment, discretion and decisiveness.
• Recent experience in teaching personal development courses.
• Counseling and related experiences.
• Demonstrated experience to working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic socioeconomic, academic and disabled backgrounds. (Diversity response will be completed as part of the application blank.)
