Central Valley Book Bank Program Coordinator
Job Description:
The Central Valley Book Bank, a program of the United Way of Fresno County, is seeking a highly motivated student to help coordinate the efforts of several service organizations in attaining their goal of providing children’s books to programs servicing disadvantaged populations. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in learning about the daily operation of a nonprofit program and multi-agency collaboration.
Responsibilities, performed under the supervision of current staff, include helping with arrangements to conduct book drives, scheduling volunteers to sort and repair books, selecting qualified recipients and arranging for distributions to targeted schools and nonprofits.
The position begins immediately, runs through the end of the spring 2009 semester and provides two $1,500 scholarships for 300 hours of work. For more information about the Book Bank visit www.cvbookbank.org.
Under the supervision of the United Way of Fresno County and the Richter Center at Fresno State, the coordinator’s duties will include:
• Identification of organizations qualifying for books.
• Arranging for book donation deliveries by individual and groups.
• Scheduling and conducting volunteer sessions to help sort, repair, repack and prepare books for distribution.
• Scheduling of times for book recipients to pick up books at the United Way.
• A once a year books sale to teachers.
Collaborating Organizations
• United Way of Fresno County (UWFC) (a) provides the space to store, sort, repair and distribute the books (b) acts as the program’s fiscal agent and (c) assistance with recruiting volunteers
• Fresno Unified School District (FYSD) will identify the schools that will participate in the school distributions during the 2008-09 school year.
• Richter Center – The Richter Center for Civic Engagement and Service-Learning will coordinate the on-campus efforts of the Marketing 100(S) students conducting book drives beginning in January, 2009. In addition, they provide assistance in recruiting volunteers for sorting and repairing books.
• Fresno Teachers Association (FTA) helps to recruit volunteers for sorting and repair of books as well as publicizing the bank activities, including the once a year book sale.
Specific activities include:
• Providing information to new contacts about the Book Bank, account registration and book withdrawals.
• Certifying nonprofits as qualifying for books.
• Assessing current inventory, responding to withdrawal requests, staging books and arranging for pickup.
• Working with school district administrators in the Central Valley to identify schools to be invited to book distributions in the future.
• Maintaining estimates of:
o Books ready to be distributed by type and quality
o Books donated to CVBB
o Books distributed by organization and type
• Providing updated information to webmaster so as to keep website current.
• Keeping the database of volunteers, book distributions and resource contacts up to date.
• Working with collaborating organizations to maintain and increase public awareness of the resources provided by CVBB.
• Maintaining a supply of materials to clean and repair books.
Qualifications:
• Good organizational and communication skills
• Basic knowledge of Word and Excel
• An interest in learning about all aspects of operating a nonprofit program
• Flexible in setting up and supervising sorting sessions (e.g. Saturday mornings, late after-noons)
• Some lifting of boxes of books required. Dollies and pallet jack are provided.

Salary: Two $1500 scholarships, payable upon completion of 150 hours each semester
